AI or Photography: Best Choice for Your Campaign?

Planning a new campaign means facing one key decision: do you need professional photography or can you simply generate visuals using artificial intelligence?

In digital marketing, the first visual impression often determines the success of an entire campaign. People process visual information 60,000 times faster than text content. High-quality visuals and videos directly increase user engagement, drive traffic and improve sales rates.

In this blog, we analyze when it is more cost-effective to hire an expert and when it makes sense to use technology, with specific real-world examples.

Does Professional Photography Increase Sales and Customer Trust?

The quality of your visual content directly reflects the value of your business.

Relying on artificial intelligence to present your business can cost you client inquiries, or leads. Research in consumer psychology and user experience clearly confirms this.

1. The Power of a Real Face: Why Clients Ignore “Perfect” Images

A study by the Nielsen Norman Group, which used eye-tracking technology, showed that visitors completely ignore generic stock photos and visuals they recognize as AI-generated. The human brain treats them as “visual noise” and skips over them. On the other hand, visitors spend significantly more time studying authentic photographs of real employees and offices because they subconsciously read reliability and company culture from them.

2. A Jump in Conversions and Sales Inquiries

Authenticity directly generates business inquiries. In a VWO A/B test, replacing a generic, perfectly polished photo with a photo of the company’s real founder, even though the image was not as “aesthetically perfect” but was real, resulted in an increase in conversions and contact form submissions of almost 35%. Clients simply want to see who they will be doing business with.

3. Reducing Perceived Risk

The B2B buying cycle is long and risky. When a potential client or partner is considering working with you, their main goal is to minimize risk. High-quality documentary photographs of your production, work processes or team in action act as physical proof that your business is operational. An AI-generated image of a modern office or smiling experts, on the other hand, sends a dangerous message: “This company is hiding its real face.”

Global Brands and Artificial Intelligence: Coca-Cola – Holidays Are Coming

Global brands that have completely replaced human emotion with artificial intelligence have faced harsh criticism. Coca-Cola’s recent Christmas campaign sparked negative public reactions because the generated content felt impersonal and damaged the authenticity consumers expect from the brand.

Coca-Cola decided to use generative artificial intelligence to redesign its classic Christmas commercial. Although this accelerated the production process and reduced costs, the audience reaction was extremely negative. Viewers called the commercial “soulless” and criticized the lack of human warmth and real emotion usually expected in holiday advertising. Visuals that felt unnatural and the removal of an authentic human element created a sense of discomfort among viewers, also known as the Uncanny Valley Effect. The technology failed to create the desired emotional connection.

This example clearly shows that technological progress, without emotional connection, cannot replace a “traditional” approach to marketing. Artificial intelligence is an excellent tool for analytics and technical processing, but when you are selling a service or product that requires human trust and tradition, authentic photography and human work remain irreplaceable.

Real-World Example: An April Fools’ Day Post for Hemco

When working for a brand like Hemco, which has spent three decades building authority on uncompromising quality and safety, every visual released to the public must communicate trust. Still, for an April Fools’ Day campaign, we intentionally chose the path of generative artificial intelligence. Why? The answer lies in balancing creative freedom and brand integrity.

Our goal was to make the audience laugh and tap into a current trend. To do this, we generated several visuals using AI.

Why Did We Choose Technology Instead of a Photographer Here?

  1. Speed of response: The campaign had to be developed and executed within a very short timeframe.
  2. Nonexistent products: “Certified home protection” was a satirical concept, not an actual product line.
  3. Protecting the brand’s reputation: Since the post was clearly communicated as an April Fools’ Day joke, the use of generated photos did not damage the perception of Hemco as a serious manufacturer of professional equipment.

Can Your Competition Legally Use Your AI Campaign?

Images generated by artificial intelligence are not protected by copyright under the current laws of the Republic of Croatia. According to Article 19 of the Copyright and Related Rights Act (Official Gazette 111/2021), an author can only be a natural person who has created the work. Since artificial intelligence does not have the status of a natural person, content it generates independently does not meet the legal definition of a copyrighted work.

This is one of the biggest and most often overlooked risks companies face today. You can invest significant financial resources in advanced tools and hours of work developing the perfect prompts to create a visual campaign. However, because such visuals currently do not have the same copyright protection as an original photograph, your competition can literally take that same visual and use it for their own promotion without any legal consequences.

On the other hand, when you hire an expert, you can secure copyright and the uniqueness of your materials on the market through a contract, helping you avoid legal issues.

Technology Speeds Up Processes, but Authenticity Builds Trust

Artificial intelligence has irreversibly accelerated processes in digital marketing. Its ability to generate visuals for fast-moving trends, concept testing and social media brings significant savings in time and resources. However, when it comes to building long-term relationships with partners and customers, there is no alternative to authenticity.

Professional photography is not only an aesthetic choice. It is a powerful signal of credibility you can send to the market. Relying exclusively on AI visuals when presenting key products or services carries the risk of damaging your reputation, alienating your audience and completely losing copyright protection to your competition.

Today’s most successful campaigns do not choose exclusively between technology and a photographer. They combine them strategically.
